Selling smart means using your skills, knowledge, and resources to optimize your sales performance while minimizing your stress and burnout. Selling smart also means taking care of yourself physically, mentally, and emotionally, so that you can be more productive, creative, and resilient in your sales career. By following these tips, you can improve your well-being and performance in sales.

First, let us explore some of the ways that stress from sales can harm your physical and mental well-being.

Some of the negative effects of stress from sales are:

Increased risk of heart disease, stroke, and high blood pressure: Stress can raise your blood pressure, cholesterol, and triglycerides, which can damage your arteries and increase your risk of cardiovascular events.

Weakened immune system and more susceptibility to infections: Stress can lower your body's ability to fight off germs and viruses, making you more prone to getting sick.

Digestive problems such as ulcers, irritable bowel syndrome, and acid reflux: Stress can affect your stomach acid production, gut motility, and intestinal permeability, which can lead to various digestive disorders.

 Set realistic and attainable goals. One of the keys to selling smart is to have clear and specific goals that are aligned with your values and vision. Having goals helps you focus your efforts, measure your progress, and celebrate your achievements. However, make sure that your goals are realistic and attainable, not too easy or too hard. Setting unrealistic or unachievable goals can lead to frustration, disappointment, and demotivation. To set realistic and attainable goals, use the SMART criteria: Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound.

Plan your day and prioritize your tasks. Another way to sell smart is to plan your day ahead and prioritize your tasks according to their importance and urgency. Planning your day helps you manage your time effectively, avoid distractions, and accomplish more in less time. Prioritizing your tasks helps you focus on the most important and urgent ones first, and delegate or eliminate the less important or non-urgent ones. To plan your day and prioritize your tasks, use the Eisenhower matrix: Urgent and Important, Not Urgent but Important, Urgent but Not Important, Not Urgent and Not Important.

Taking breaks throughout the day and practicing relaxation techniques such as breathing exercises, meditation, or yoga. One of the best ways to cope with stress and improve your well-being is to take breaks throughout the day and practice relaxation techniques. Whether your sales work is related to you working from home or in an office, taking some time to step away from your tasks and focus on your breathing, meditation, or yoga can have many benefits. Relaxation techniques can help you lower your blood pressure, reduce muscle tension, improve your mood, and enhance your concentration.

Leverage technology and tools. A smart salesperson knows how to use technology and tools to enhance their sales performance and efficiency. Technology and tools can help you automate repetitive tasks, streamline workflows, communicate better with prospects and customers, track and analyze data, generate leads, close deals, and more. Some examples of technology and tools that can help you sell smart are CRM systems, email marketing platforms, social media platforms, video conferencing tools, sales intelligence tools, etc.

Build relationships and trust. Selling is not just about selling products or services; it's also about selling yourself and building relationships with prospects and customers. People buy from people they like, know, and trust. Therefore, a smart salesperson knows how to build rapport, establish credibility, show empathy, listen actively, ask open-ended questions, provide value-added solutions, follow up regularly, etc. Building relationships and trust can help you create loyal customers who will buy from you again and refer you to others.

Learn continuously and improve constantly. A smart salesperson never stops learning and improving their skills, knowledge, and abilities. The sales industry is constantly changing and evolving; new trends emerge; customer needs change; competitors innovate; etc. To stay ahead of the curve and adapt to the changing market conditions, you need to keep learning new things and improving your existing ones. You can learn continuously and improve constantly by reading books, blogs, articles; listening to podcasts; watching videos; attending webinars; taking courses; joining communities; seeking feedback; etc.

Finding hobbies or activities that bring you joy and fulfillment outside of work. Finding hobbies or activities that bring you joy and fulfillment outside of work is not only good for your mental health, but also for your career. Hobbies can help you relax, recharge, and discover new aspects of yourself. They can also boost your creativity, productivity, and problem-solving skills at work. Whether you enjoy reading, gardening, cooking, or playing video games, hobbies can enrich your life and make you happier.

Take care of yourself physically, mentally, and emotionally. Last but not least, a smart salesperson takes care of themselves physically, mentally, and emotionally. Selling can be stressful, demanding, and exhausting; if you don't take care of yourself, you can suffer from burnout, illness, or depression. Taking care of yourself means eating healthy, exercising regularly, sleeping well, relaxing often, meditating daily, having hobbies, spending time with family and friends, etc. Taking care of yourself can help you boost your energy, mood, and motivation; enhance your creativity, productivity, and performance; and prevent or cope with stress, anxiety, and depression.
